Yamunotri Dham

Yamunotri Dham is associated to one of the Chardham Yatra or Chota Chardham of India – Yamunotri Dham, Gangotri Dham, Shri Kedarnath Dham & Shri Badrinath Dham respectively. Every year millions of devotees from all around the India and abroad commence their Chardham Yatra and reaches to Shri Yamunotri Ji Dham which is the first among the four Dhams.

The temple shrine is situated on the side of Bamndarpoonch Mountain and near the foot of Kalind Mountain. Ma Yamunotri Temple is the prime shrine, glimpse and darshan of Idol made of black marble of Shri Yamunotri Ji makes the devotees to forget all the fatigue of trek. Near the temple shrine is a hot water spring Surya Kund gushing out of the mountain where one can cook the rice and take them as Prasad with them back to their homes. Near the hot spring is a rock known as Divya Shila, the Shila is place where everyone has to bow down their head for Puja before the main Shrine. Divya Shila is deemed as the Idol of deity and hence the devotees bow down their head to this shrine and offer the rice, potatoes cooked at Suryakund as Prasadam here first.

Shloka:

तत्र द्विय शिलानाम, स्पर्शाम् मुक्तिदायकं ।

                                              कलोध्रम विहिनाय, पूजा करोति मानवः ॥

Meaning: In Kalyug who so ever commence the Pious Yatra of Shri Yamunotri Dham and do the Pooja of Sacred Divya shila got  saved from uncertain death, miseries and attains Vaikunth Lok.

Gauri kund is hot water kund and has medicinal qualities and is beneficial for skin. It is said that taking bath in hot water springs burns away all the ill and Paap Karmas.

Yamuna River

In kaliyug for the  wellness of humanity Ma Yamuna emerged in the form of a river on earth. Maharishi Gemini had meditated at Yamunotri Dham and a Ma asked Ma Yamuna to descend on earth from Gau Lok. 

Another legend associated to Yamunotri says Lord Surya – The sun is father of Yamuna & Yama. Their mother Sanjana could not bear the Tej of bright and dazzling husband The Sun. Once she left her sister Chaya in place of her and went to her parent’s home. Later Chaya & Sun have a Sun. Chaya was not much compassionate about Sanjna’s children. Once Yama unable to bear the bias and cruel behaviour of Chaya he threatened her by his foot. Because of this Chaya became furious and cursed Yama that he will lose his foot. Yamuna his beloved sister could not bear this and seeing his brother in pain she weeps. Her tears for her brother became the river Yamuna. Tortoise is symbol of Ma Yamuna and can be seen on pictures at temples.

History

Old Yamunotri Temple

Yamunotri dham Temple dedicated to Ma Yamuna, daughter of Lord Sun & sister of Yama Lord or death. The main shrine was constructed by Tehri Naresh Sudarshan shah in 1839. Due to an earthquake the temple got damaged and was rebuilt by Rani of Galauria. However even after that different damages due to natural disaster the temple was reconstructed in various phases.

Shri Yamunotri Dham is opened for the pilgrims on Akshay Tritaya every year and closes on the day of Yamdeep second day after Dipawali or on Bhyadooj. The announcement of the opening of the Kapaat is declared on the auspicious day of Basant Panchmi by the priest. In winters the Idol of Ma Yamunotri devi is taken to the Khushi math Village of Kharsali. Here Idol of Ma Yamuna remains from closing to opening of Chota Chardham Yatra again. Vedic Yug seems to be live again by Vedic chants, celebration and procession during the opening and closing ceremony of Shri Yamunotri Dham temple. Tentative opening dates of Shri Yamunotri Dham Yatra 2020 is 26th April.

Important: Tentative Opening date of Shri Gangotri Dham is 26th April, 2020, Shri Kedarnath Dham 28th April, 2020 and Shri Badrinath Dham is 28th April,2020.

3. Yamunotri Dham Temple Darshan Timing

Morning 6:00 am to 12:00 pm 

Evening – 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm

Shri Yamunotri Temple Opens for Darshan and Pooja every morning from 06:00 AM to 12:00 PM and from 02:00 PM to 08:00 PM in the evening during Yatra season. Every day priest of Shri Yamunotri Ji perform the Mangal Aarti in the morning from 6:30 am to 7:30 am. Evening Shayan Aarti helds every day from 6:30 pm to 7:30 PM after which the door of the temple is closed for Pilgrims.

Yamunotri Dham Reach & Accessibility

After landing at Haridwar/Dehradun railway station or Jollygrant airport one can drive to Barkot via Mussoorie. Drive through Chamba, Dharasu is long route and hence better to follow the Via Mussoorie route. Haridwar to Barkot is 180 Kms – takes appx 6 hours & 140 Kms from Dehradun- appx 5 hours drive in medium car.

   From Barkot it is better to start early in morning. From Barkot to Jankichatti can be covered by vehicle and is appx 45 kms drive. An important Yamunotri Travel tip is to carry long non slippery rubber boot as there is Trek of 6 kms one way starting from Jankichatti which can be covered in 2 to 3 hours. But after rain the trek becomes muddy and slippery. For different age groups depending upon their comfort they can hire, pony, Doli or Palki for the Trek. On the way there are shelters and benches to take a short halt. 

    You have facility to hire them on spot with paying according to rates fixed by govt. Appx Idea of Round trip Pony in Yamunotri – INR 2400 per pony & Doli: INR 4000 to INR 5000, Palki – INR 6000. However at Kedarnth Dham the rates are bit higher as the trek is long return pony appx charge in Kedarnath Dham Yatra is around INR 3500, Pithu INR 6000 , Palki – INR 8000 appx. The owner of Pony, Palki and doli acts as your Yamunotri tour guide to whom you can ask and get the information about the trek and travel too. It is recommended to pay them money after completion of the trek not in advance. 

Accommodation

There are lots of stay options available during the Yatra route. The accommodation starts from Naaugaon which is 8 kms before Barkot, then Barkot continuing to Jankichatti. One can make stopover and hotel stay as according to their approach, interest and reach. The hotel ranges from standard to deluxe options with normal to good amenities, but should not be compared as hotels of plains. The rates of hotels vary according to travel dates and Yatra rush. In Yamunotri Yatra 2020 you will find some new hotel constructions as government is attracting local investment to cater the stay need of pilgrims.
